Choosing a Snorkel for Scuba Diving

The best scuba diving snorkel depends on where and how you dive. Traditional snorkels offer a simple, streamlined design, while semi-dry snorkels help reduce water entry from waves and splashes. Dry-top snorkels use a mechanism designed to limit water entering the tube when submerged, making them particularly comfortable in choppy surface conditions.

Travelling divers may prefer a compact or foldable snorkel that can be stored in a BCD pocket when not in use. When choosing a dive snorkel, consider mouthpiece comfort, breathing resistance, purge valve, flexibility, attachment system and overall size.

Dry, Semi-Dry or Traditional Snorkel?

Dry snorkels provide the greatest protection against water entering from the top, while semi-dry models reduce splashes without completely sealing the tube. Traditional open-top snorkels offer maximum simplicity and are often preferred by divers who want a lightweight, low-profile design.
